New England Auroral Observations 1720 - 1948
Directory name: new_england_auroral_obs_1720_1948
NSSDC Data Set ID: SPIO-00375
Old NSSDC ID: GE-11C
This digital data set contains observations of auroras in New England during the period 1740 through 1948. The observations were transcribed from a variety of sources by S.M. Silverman, and are from various locations in the states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The data are in time order in 18 ASCII files, originally contained on three PC diskettes. The volume is approximately 3.6 MBytes as stored in word-processor RTF form, or about 2.7 MBytes in plain ASCII text. Additional information is available via the web page at and following. Under the heading "Other NSSDC Resources", select Auroral Observations, Ancient and Modern". The files in this directory are presented in two formats: Rich Text Format (RTF) and simple ASCII text. The degrees symbol and possibly a few others may be rendered correctly in the RTF version, but not in the simple ASCII text version. Otherwise, the two files in each pair are the same. Each file name is indicative of the start time of the file. (The "ane" in the file names presumably stands for "Aurora -- New England".)
